Allen Schmidt’s Expertise After retiring from the Army as a Medical Service Corps Colonel, Ellen and I moved back to rural Western Kansas to start a new chapter. I soon found myself drafted to fill an unexpired Kansas senate seat. I have now completed that term as a Kansas State Senator and recently completed my term on the Kansas Board of Regents, where we were in charge of the six public universities in the state of Kansas. The senate position was an experience of a lifetime which allowed me to serve rural Kansans and rural needs in a way I never anticipated. I am also currently working part-time to establish an endowment and planned giving program for Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, a non-profit organization serving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 18 rural counties in Northwest Kansas. I also still serve on the Governor's Education Council and the Governor's KanCare Advisory Council. We also established one of the newest farm wineries in Kansas called Resurrection Vineyard, near Hays, Kansas, right along Interstate 70. See Resurrection Vineyard on Facebook. We will continue to develop the family farm as a gathering place for friends, family, and... of course, our grandchildren. One of the signature experiences I have had and continue to be involved with is a men's ministry that sharpens faith, MarkedMenforChrist.org. We feel blessed to be on the 5th generation family farm and very grateful for the opportunities to serve in so many ways.
