  • My experiences have molded my teaching philosophy, which is what I will strive to carry out in my own classroom. (This is a synopsis, see: Bockstahler.Philosophy(08-14) for the full version). I believe all students should be seen as: - Individuals - Part of a culture - Capable - Problem-solvers - Intrinsically motivated I believe all students should have the opportunity to: - Partake in constructing their own learning. - Grow and develop, not only academically but in all domains (ie: socially, artistically, physically, etc.) - Be seen for both strengths and areas for growth. - Talk, discuss, engage in discourse throughout all subjects - Be effective young leaders I believe teachers must: - Have a passion for kids. - Be learners themselves, they must not only desire to learn more, but take action to do so. - Encourage curiosity; it is essential they aspire to inspire learning. - Read! - Value diversity - Advocate - Build strong relationships - Be team oriented I believe children are effective learners when: - The environment is safe. - Instruction builds off students’ interests and strengths. - Connections are established. Children learn best when they can connect new information to previous knowledge and real experiences. - Curriculum is developmentally appropriate. - Instruction is differentiated. - All subject areas are given attention. - Teaching is integrated. - A constructivist ideology is valued. - Learning is focused on the process instead of the product, kids are learning for understanding. - Curriculum is based on exploratory learning, investigations, and hands on. - Play is valued and encouraged. - Tasks are authentic. - Assessment is as authentic and used to inform instruction. - Challenging, appropriate vocabulary is used in subjects. - Essential skills, 21st century skills, are valued and encouraged. - Classrooms are managed through an atmosphere of cooperation and respect, not control and discipline.
