  • Education, Innovation, and Leadership are the hallmarks of my professional career. At Emory, I have spent the last decade accomplishing these goals and achieving them at national and international levels of distinction. I am a full professor of neurosurgery and orthopaedics with over 40 issued patents worldwide. I have several FDA 510K cleared products that are currently being used every day. I enjoy interacting with surgeons across the world and discussing how my products are improving their patients’ lives. I travel extensively to teach on the safe use of my surgical techniques while branding Emory as a center of surgeon innovation. I have partnered with some of the largest medical manufacturers in the world to continue to innovate while at Emory. I am a co-director of the Emory Spine Center. To prepare myself for this role, I worked with Emory University Midtown Hospital leadership on the Emory-GE Healthcare project on operating room efficiency. We have successfully managed the integration of Emory employed physicians, private practice surgeons, and Kaiser employed physicians into the busiest surgical center in the Emory Healthcare System. We have grown our surgical volume by over 30% while maintaining quality, efficiency, and camaraderie. I was also a physician leader for the Emory-Deloitte Value Innovation Project where we were able to reduce the cost of spine care by over 2 million per year. My work looked at the cost of inpatient surgical care across the healthcare system. I personally developed a Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) algorithm for parsing out clinical diagnosis related groups (DRG) into cost centers to better match surgical procedures versus current practice. My work was novel and we have published our research and methodology in a leading medical journal. These practices along with our understanding of inpatient surgical care was the nidus for the Emory-Walmart collaboration. I initiated the discussions with Health Design Plus (HDP) to help bring Walmart to Emory. My work in value innovation was a key driver for us to be able to successfully negotiate bundle payments with Walmart. We have now moved to enterprise contracts with other employers such as Publix. We hope that such measures will reduce the cost of care to society while improving quality. These experiences in healthcare innovation and leadership have positioned me as a national expert on value-driven spine care. I have learned that transparency, team-building and dedication to patient care are critical to success.
