Karen Whitehair’s Expertise I believe in diligence, integrity, and hard work. No matter what job I have had my goal has always been to leave the situation better than I found it. I made a career using my project management skills building collections stewardship programs from the ground up at institutions such as the Sewall-Belmont House (now the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument), the Sotterley Foundation, and Montpelier Mansion. I believe effective project planning is the key to successful execution and positive outcomes. I have used my supervisory skills not only to train volunteers, interns, and staff to help me make these projects happen, I also passed on my knowledge of professional practice so they have the tools to be effective as they moved through their careers, whatever that end choice might happen to be. I believe supervising is synonymous with mentoring. I find supervising to be the best part of any job. To process collections properly requires not only solid organizational skills but also acute attention to detail. These skill sets can be applied to all kinds of projects that require inventory control, data collection, data entry, copyediting, and other related tasks. Most of my work has required creative problem-solving skills because many times the resources were not there to carry out the process to the highest, most expensive level. Yet, it was still possible to do it correctly (complete documentation and proper rehousing to provide environmental protection). There is more than one way to get the job done right. I love to research, write, and share orally what I have learned with others. I am an academically trained historian with years of experience conducting research. My writing experience covers not only technical writing such as developing professional policy and procedural documents, but also crafting articles explaining the history of a structure, an object, or the life of an impactful person for newsletters or professional journals including American History, American Spirit, Twins Magazine, and History News. I have offered collection care workshops for colleagues and the public and have presented at numerous professional conferences. I recently embarked on becoming a Maryland Master Naturalist. My goal is to help others better understand our natural world and to encourage people to take actions to slow climate change. In sum: • I find joy in teaching others. • I love to learn new things. • I delight in new challenges. • I want to help others and make a difference.
