My summer at the Sunny Day Fund was a sunny and inspiring experience! Their mission of increasing access to emergency savings through employer-matched emergency savings benefits is so critical especially since 37% of Americans would have trouble handling a 400 unexpected expense.
I had the opportunity to engage in user research with individuals from our target sectors and share those insights with our Customer Success, Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams. Ultimately, I used those insights to create updated product marketing collateral which was used in a customer launch at the end of the summer.
My pivot to the Global DEI Strategy team was an energizing experience as I am super passionate about making people feel heard, seen, and known. I steered our data disclosure and communication initiatives including launching our inaugural firm-wide racial equity progress report in the fall of 2020. I also led partnerships with organizations including the World Economic Forum, Managing Leaders for Tomorrow (MLT), and the Human Rights Campaign - Corporate Equality Index.
I was especially inspired by the combined force of our small but mighty team coupled with our DEI Business Leads and champions across the firm who amplified and really led our initiatives within their respective businesses. Plus to be doing this work in the summer of 2020 and the following year was incredibly special as our industry, clients, and the world reckoned with the internal and external change necessary for a more just and racially equitable future. I launched our speaker series, Learning Out Loud, featuring DEI experts from across sectors, reaching 10,000+ participants across the firm and encouraging them to listen, learn, and ultimately take action.
My time as an Investment Management Associate (IMA) was very formative. I was responsible for our mutual fund and ETF sales goals with independent financial advisors from firms such as LPL, Ameriprise, Northwestern Mutual, Wells Fargo Advisors, and others in Virginia and the Carolinas. I learnt a lot about managing a multi-million book of business, territory and pipeline management, and creating a seamless sales experience with our product strategy, portfolio solutions, and Aladdin partners.
During my time on the Sales Desk, I was also very passionate about creating an inclusive and diverse culture. I leaned into leadership roles within our Women's Initiative Network (our women's ERG) and our community nonprofit partnerships with HomeFront and Arm In Arm which supported families in Trenton and Mercer County.
As an analyst on the Sales Desk, my day to day ranged from creating custom Morningstar Direct analyses for our internal sales team to speaking with clients from various wealth management firms on their sales and support needs.
I interned at BlackRock on the US Wealth Advisory Sales Desk after my third year at UVA. It was my initial foray into the world of sales and business development, which I learnt I really enjoyed. I was ultimately in the Top 3 of our Sales Desk intern pitch competition where we pitched mutual funds and ETFs to sales leadership. I was also a member of the winning Portfolio Challenge team across the entire Americas internship program. We created an investment thesis and presentation, ultimately pitching to senior management including the CFO of BlackRock, which was an awesome learning experience!
Janalakshmi Financial Services Pvt. Ltd. is one of the largest micro-finance institutions in India with a focus on empowering those in underserved areas.
I worked with the VP of Strategy on competitive analysis and market research, which resulted in a presentation to the Board of Directors about our strategy towards achieving Top-5 MFI status in India.
Over the course of the summer, I also did grassroots research including field-visits with the loan-collection officers and interviews with the self-help groups (SHGs) in Bengaluru. The SHG members' passion and serious commitment toward repayment reaffirmed my continual focus on furthering financial inclusion.
