Began working for a sign business in 1991 because I enjoyed working with metal and was eager to learn electrics. After 5 years I decided to go it on my own. Bought a used bucket truck and set up shop in my basement, Sign Medix, Inc. was born. Now in my 20th year of business as I look back; the definition of a sign has not changed but the significance of a good sign has. Signs tell a story, a story of evolution. Signs originated as ‘place marker’s a building marker to draw in customers. Signs were not on maps, they were visual references. As a business owner your reputation was behind that sign, word of mouth was your advertising and the sign was the destination for your prospective patron. Over the years “Signs” have shown the evolution of economic highs and lows, signs coming down when the economy weakened. Entrepreneurs opening businesses when the economy improved, more recently the increase in corporate mergers and acquisitions. As a custom builder for gas price signs I have seen the lows and highs and lows again of fuel prices create at times urgent requests for signage numerals, at one point we had created the “5” digit for the pricer signs! The significant change in the industry trend has moved to LED Digital. When the internet caught all of our attention and you were able to find a business through a search engine or Map Quest your destination, signage took a significant leap! DIGITAL…….”Signs” have changed business markers into Landmarks. “Signs” have become a necessary tool to market and advertise products and services. No longer do they just mark a spot on a map, even if your business does not have a physical footprint you are able to place an ad on a digital billboard.
