Ravi Malik's Expertise
  • I am a Software Developer with more than 8 years of experience working on web back-end for scalable web applications. Solving the challenges of high-scalability and high-performance in applications are my drives as a programmer. In my previous software developer roles, I have used Partitioning, Replication, Load balancing, in-memory caching and message queues to build and also sometimes design scalable web applications. Currently, I am pursuing a Masters in Computer Science from the University at Buffalo where I am further improving on my Distributed System's skills. The biggest expectation that I have of myself is to attain a high level of skill in the Systems domain so as to tackle interesting problems and write elegant solutions for it. I highly admire people like Linus Torvalds who are highly skilled at what they do and are solving real-world problems. The fact that Linus invented Linux because of a lack of freely available Unix OS and Git because of a lack of at-par version control tool, and that he was skilled enough to solve these big problems at that time, is truly amazing. In the future I see myself having this level of skill and expertise that if I face a real problem, I could ask myself "how hard can it be to write my own solution for it?" and I would go ahead and solve it. I highly admire the Open Source philosophy and the pioneers of the Open Source movement. As Eric S Raymond says, "The world is full of Interesting problems waiting to be solved and one should never waste time reinventing the wheel". I am a proud believer of the hacker culture (not the cracker, breaching security). Software Engineer by choice and I do software because it's fun. At the end of the day, doing what I like most is what matters to me.
