We did everything, and I had my first taste of UX work helping set up a corporate user research program when most people didn’t know what UX was. During the 2008 downturn I pivoted, reinventing myself in content production, in time sharpening my skills and moving to front end development. I never lost my affinity for the user experience, so I went back and earned a degree in Experience Design emphasizing information architecture, persona development, user research, and prototyping. Now I’m transitioning back to UX. I’m happiest, most locked in when I’m working to understand and help the user, doing interviews, research, and design that served user and business needs. Too often lately the chance to do this gets in short supply, and I want to reconnect with that feeling. I want to be technical and creative, and make use of my diverse skillset to build bridges. I’m now very well-rounded with experience in UX design, user research, UI design, front end development, and working with accessibility and branding guidelines. In a way over time it all comes together - I’m a veteran of the office where estimating my time and delivering in a high intensity environment was paramount. I improvise naturally, and I choose better battles. I speak the language of coders and content developers, and this only makes me a better UXer. I love discovering how a thing works, how people actually use it and how it can be better. I really enjoy using this discovery to help people, and I really shine when working with a group of skilled folks all working towards this.
