- Earlier days I joined google at 2013, Arup handed me a simple task: add a cache layer into the URL compression library. Simple and boring, right? It turned to be not days later... after read the codes line by line, I got surprising insight that if we do the loop from right to left instead of left to right, it's 50% faster!! So I turned around and talked with Li and Kayi for some confirmation. Arup suggested we should be cautious about the change. To prove that, my first MapReduce job was written to scan trillions of URLs from storage then compare the old result and new result... several weeks later, we submitted the codes. As tiny this task was, it ended with another surprise several months later: someone else optimized the codes again which run 100% faster!!! Why? There is CompactTrie class sitting somewhere under google3/ to build the keywords dictionary! I LGTMed the change as the new code owner and rerun the MapReduce.... so starts the real journey..
