This was a highly political post working alongside politicians and the Combined Authority Mayor, needing skilful chairing and brokering of difficult relationships across political and civic boundaries. I continue to be a member of this board having stepped down because of the time pressures of the Chair role. I am passionate about industrial research and created the TWI Innovation Network comprising hundreds of members including SMEs, Industrial Companies and Universities and chaired this network for 10 years. TWI won 1 billion of research projects for the members of the TWI Innovation Network during this period. I launched the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC). This 150m, 10-year initiative comprises of TWI’s Industrial Members, SMEs and Universities. NSIRC has trained 590 PhDs, MScs and Research fellows in an industrial environment. TWI was a founding member of MTC (part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult). I was a Non Executive Director of the Manufacturing Technology Centre sitting on their board for four years.
