Adam Kemberling’s Expertise Professional researcher studying the impacts of climate change on marine ecology. Author of the Gulf of Maine Warming Reports. Using the rapid warming of the Gulf of Maine as a natural experiment, I (with the help of other scientists) study how the fish and zooplankton communities are changing in response to rapid regional climate change. For a closer look at my work please explore my portfolio on github: https://github.com/adamkemberling. My Path to Maine: I knew growing up that I wanted to be a marine biologist. I was fortunate during my masters research to have the opportunity to work directly with fisherman across the Gulf of Mexico and learn about their history in the area and their concerns about their futures. Having that personal connection with stakeholders sold me on the importance of the data being collected, and motivated me to lean into the analytical and programming skills that researchers use to separate signal from the noise in data. Data that often isn't easy or cheap to collect. I've learned through these experiences that communication is vital to success in almost any endeavor. I've seen first hand cases where communication failures had harmed both parties and bred distrust between two groups (fishermen and fisheries management) that share a common interest in sustainability. With this lesson in mind I shifted my attention from field biology to the more technical computer skills that would help me communicate my research in more engaging and interesting ways. The recent explosive growth of the field of data science has brought with it many (often open-source) tools which I feel many many scientists could be taking advantage of to help them communicate their work more effectively and to a broader audience. Web-based analysis tools like R-shiny and Quarto have allowed me to create content and reports that audiences could interact with and better learn from than power points or drab pdf documents. It is my goal to bridge this gap between researcher and data scientist, and to produce impactful data-driven products that are approachable and effectively communicate information for decision makers.
