I could say that I chose to work in a range of industries to give myself a broad vertical background. Automotive, Oil & Gas and Investment Banking all look quite slick when I write them down now. But it really wasn't that well thought through. The only remotely smart thing I did was spot that this UNIX thing seemed to be taking off. The same goes for my switch to a San Francisco dot.com in the late 90's. "Internet Security" sounded like it had legs, and the lure of share options dazzled. I didn't even recognise at the time that it was a switch from client-side to supply-side. But it was during my time at Company-i, surrounded by lots of clever people that I realised that I really, really like professional services. I never call it "consulting" because my suit isn't expensive enough to carry it off. PS is all about delivering something tangible for people who really like you if you do it well. Who'll then have a beer with you afterwards. And probably invite you back to do something else in the future. I guess I like solving problems and making things work better. And beer.
