Ahmed Hankir’s Expertise Dr Ahmed Hankir MBChB PGCert (Psychiatry) PGCert (Epidemiology) is Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychiatry with the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies (USA), Senior Research Fellow for the Bedfordshire Centre for Mental Health Research in Association with Cambridge University (UK) and a mental health clinician with the National Health Service (UK). Dr Hankir's research interests and activities include mental health stigma; Islamophobia, violent extremism and psychological distress in Muslims; undergraduate medical education; global mental health; recruitment into psychiatry and the mental health of healthcare professionals and students. Under the auspices of the American Psychiatric Association Dr Hankir was commissioned by Springer to co-edit the first book of its kind on psychiatry and Islamophobia with the former advisor to Barack Obama on Muslim mental health. Dr Hankir has delivered oral presentations and keynote lectures alongside Noble Prize Laureates and Ted speakers in national and international conferences all over the world. Dr Hankir also presented the first study of its kind on Muslim perceptions of British combat troops to military officials at the Ministry of Defence, Whitehall, London. Dr Hankir is author of the anti-stigma programme, 'The Wounded Healer' which is an innovative method of pedagogy that blends the performing arts with psychiatry. Dr Hankir has been fortunate enough to deliver the Wounded Healer to over 65,000 people in 14 countries in 5 continents worldwide. Dr Hankir is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards most notably the 2013 Royal College of Psychiatrists Foundation Doctor of the Year. Dr Hankir was twice a Finalist for the Royal College of Psychiatrists Communicator of the Year Award and has been shortlisted for the 2018 Core Psychiatric Trainee of the Year Award. Dr Hankir is the only person in the history of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Awards to be a Finalist in three separate categories.
