Alexander Waters’s Expertise I am a sociologist at the Social and Global Studies Centre at RMIT University, where I teach and was awarded my PhD in 2020. I serve as the Oceania section editor of Interface: a journal for and about social movements which can be found here: InterfaceJournal.net. Through the TASA network, I also co-ordinate the Melbourne Political Economy and Social Movements Reading Group for postgraduate students who are interested in meeting up on a fortnightly basis to discuss texts of mutual interest, with a view to using the analyses that emerge as the basis for co-writing academic journal articles and other publications. This can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/PoliticalEconomySocialMovementsReaders My research is situated at the intersection of political economy and social movement studies. In particular, I'm interested in populist movements that have emerged as a result of the new dynamics unleashed by the GFC of 2008 and the long hegemonic crisis of neoliberalism. My thesis explores three cases: the Climate Justice Movement, the Podemos Movement-Party and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Using a mixed-methods approach I seek to demonstrate some of the outcomes of each movement in the wake of a major mobilisation (surrounding a UN summit or an election campaign) to answer the overall question 'was it all for nothing?' In other words, what are the impacts (defined in terms of mass culture, institutions and policy) that these movements can claim to have contributed towards? In addition to my research work, I have experience tutoring and guest lecturing in a range of social science subjects at RMIT and Monash University at both the undergraduate and masters levels. These include Work in a Global Society, Organisational Analysis, Political Economy of International Business, Global Political Economy, Intercultural Communication, Global Communication in a Digital Age, and Critical Ideas in Contemporary Social & Political Theory.
