  My name is Allison Smith and I am a graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint. I earned my Bachelors of Science degree with a major in Elementary Education and minors in Language Arts and Mathematics in 2017. Throughout my college career I have maintained a 4.0 GPA and have been named to the Dean’s List every semester. My experience working with children include working in a preschool classroom, coaching a youth basketball team, and observing classrooms throughout my time at U of M-Flint. I also am a certified substitute teacher through the Genesee Intermediate School District. First and foremost I plan to create a safe, secure and caring environment where students know that their ideas, opinions, and suggestions will be respected by the teacher and the class. Students will know that there is more than one right answer and everyone’s opinion will be noted and valued. I will create an environment where students are constantly challenged and asked to look at things in a new way. I will look to William Glasser’s Reality Approach Control/Choice Theory in guiding my behavior plan. Rules and limits will be set for the classroom with input from the students, allowing them to take personal responsibility for their actions. Therefore, students “choose” consequences when they make behavior choices, whether it be positive or negative. Having not only rules but rewards is very important. I want my students to know that their success is my number one priority. I will display and introduce a work ethic as a teacher that I hope my students will adopt. I will implement a team environment where students care for and help each other when needed. I understand that not every child will learn in the same way. I will use multiple intelligences and differentiation strategies so that each student has an equal opportunity to learn.
