Andrew Beggs’s Expertise As a Professor of Cancer Genetics & Surgery at University of Birmingham, I combine clinical practice and research to advance the diagnosis and treatment of bowel cancer, but have wide ranging reseach interests in many other cancers. I have over 20 years of experience in general surgery and coloproctology. I am also a Deputy Director of the Birmingham CRUK Experimental Cancer Centre and an Alan Turing Fellow. In addition to this, I hold an MRC Senior Clinical Fellow award, a highly prestigious competitive research fellowship for clinician scientists I lead a multidisciplinary team of over 50 scientists who use multi-omics profiling, long read and single cell sequencing, and organoid models to understand the underlying biology and heterogeneity of cancer and to develop stratified medicine approaches. My research programme aims to answer two fundamental questions - why does treatment resistance occur in cancer, and how can we overcome it? I also have extensive experience of leadership within teams both large and small - as the deputy director of the CRUK funded Birmingham Experimental Cancer Centre, co-lead of the section of Translational Biology and Genomics with the University of Birmingham and chief clinician for the NHS AI Lateral Flow Device Reader programme (which covered the entire UK population at it's peak). As head of Somatic Cancer for the NHS South and Central Genomic Medicine Service I shape strategic decision making on cancer genomic provision for a population of 15M people. I have also provided strategic advice for cutting edge biotechnology and sequencing companies allowing them to develop their clinical offer as well as bring precision medicine approaches to the clinic, from assay conception through to clinical validation and implementation. I have published in high-impact journals such as Nature, Cell, Science, the BMJ and The Lancet, and I have secured grant funding from prestigious sources such as the MRC, the Wellcome Trust, and CRUK. I also contribute to national and international research networks and committees, such as the S-CORT, OCCAMS, DETERMINE and SMPEDS2 consortia. I sit on the MRC Cellular and Molecular Medicine Board, and Sarcoma UK Research Strategy Committee. My mission is to improve the outcomes and quality of life of patients with cancer through innovation and collaboration.
