Ever since writing my first program in Basic on the Commodore 64 to control MIDI on the Oberheim OB8 synth, I have been obsessed with the idea of using computers to solve practical problems. Software is a never-ending puzzle that I am passionate about solving. This passion carried me through a BSEE at ASU, and I had the privilege of being the main computer guy at every Civil Engineering firm I worked at during that time. When the surveyors needed a clean, automatic way to reduce their notes, I learned C so I could write them one – and couldn’t believe I got paid to do it! After graduation I worked on Star Wars for the Department of Defense, did a stint at Artisoft (peer-to-peer networking), and made my way to Silicon Valley. While working in Silicon Valley during the Dot Com magic I dug into Assembly programming just because it was challenging and fun, and because of this landed a gig at the one of hottest stealth Start Ups in the valley – Transmeta. I was also able to combine my passion for programming with my love of music when I called E-mu Systems, designers of some of the best synths in the world, and convinced them they needed to hire me as a software test engineer. I got to develop on some of the most advanced professional keyboards in the world before they hit the market, work with music industry heavy weights, and help ensure that the keyboards were truly world class. My contacts at E-mu led to a position as the SQA Manager at Staccato Systems, and incredibly cool startup out of Stanford that did some mind-blowing sound effects software for the gaming industry. About this time the Dot Com crash occurred, and during the height of crash I received a call from Microsoft saying that they found my resume on one of the job sites and wanted to know if I was interested in flying up to Redmond for an interview. Was I ever! By the time I flew back to CA there was an offer waiting for me, and I spent the next 17 years working with some of the best and brightest in the industry. Wow, what fantastic ride that was. The time came when I realized I needed a break to do something completely different, recharge my soul and clear my mind, which lead to me taking a year off to work on our cabin rental business, Cabins by Mt Rainier, advance my pilot license ratings and work on my music.
