Brad Lucas’s Expertise I teach a variety of courses in writing and rhetoric, drawn to the ways that we use language for complex audiences and complicated situations. My work spans an array of interrelated areas: composition, argumentation, research methodologies, social movements, technical communication, professional development, and various forms of professional writing, editing, and design. Deeply steeped in mathematics and programming languages as a child, I developed an abiding interest in emergent technology, media rhetoric, and data analysis that I pursued alongside more traditional areas in the liberal arts. Through my MA and MLIS, I cultivated my knowledge of textual analysis, archival research, statistics, and digital culture, along with work in documentary film and multi-media composing. My fascination with human inquiry, disciplinary knowledge, and institutional influence led to my PhD dissertation on research practices in rhetoric and composition. Since then, I have continued my efforts to understand research and writing methodologies across the disciplines. My scholarship has elsewhere thrived with my grounding as a research methodologist and my investment in technical communication practices. In 2006, I co-founded the TCU New Media Writing Studio, later rebranded as the Center for Digital Expression, where I teach technical and professional writing for the programs in Digital Culture and Data Analytics. As TCU campus liaison for the Lone Star Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication, I continue to learn from industry experts, and I recently began a statewide study of technical writing pedagogy representing faculty from 53 Texas two-year colleges. My early work aimed to illuminate the struggles of individuals who attempt to persuade challenging, if not outright hostile, audiences. My first book was a study of academic freedom and protest (Radicals, Rhetoric, and the War: The University of Nevada in the Wake of Kent State), and my current research focuses on the rhetorical, organizational, and media dynamics of Sixties revolutionary groups. I have drawn on these experiences to inform my leadership, serving as Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Composition Studies and holding a range of administrative positions at TCU: Chair of the Institutional Review Board and various departmental positions (Chair, Associate Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Undergraduate Studies). I currently serve on the TCU Core Curriculum Council, focusing on our writing emphasis courses and the assessment of all Core communication curriculum.
