C Pickering’s Expertise My work experience includes 40 years in higher education, including six years as department chair and 22 as dean, five years in public education, and a year in mental health services. In higher education my major teaching areas are elementary school curriculum and research, educational psychology, and literacy teaching and learning. In 2007 I retired from the University of Southern Indiana, where for 19 years I had served as dean of the College of Education and Human Services and professor of education. Since 2007 I have worked in higher education in Missouri, Arkansas, and Ohio, in mental health services in Illinois, and in public schools in St. Louis County, where I reside. Most recently, from September 2015 through January 2019 I worked as substitute teacher for the St. Louis County Special School District, Kelly Educational Staffing, and Hazelwood School District. I worked a total of 307 days. For Kelly Educational Services I worked mainly in the Normandy and Parkway School Districts. My work for the Special School District included experience with students at all grade levels (ages 5 through 20), including mild-to-moderate and severely disabled individuals, in a variety of settings, including: special classrooms, resource rooms, a special education elementary school, a special education high school, and inclusion settings in regular classrooms. For Kelly Educational Staffing I taught in two school districts, Normandy, a district serving a largely minority population (roughly 97 percent African-American), and Parkway, one of the largest districts in St. Louis County. My work in the Hazelwood School District was also mainly in schools with large minority enrollments. Overall, my experiences during this time were challenging, interesting, and very beneficial to me in terms of expanding my teaching abilities and my understanding of the current culture and challenges of public schools and classrooms.
