  This year (2017) I am completing my undergraduate education at Oregon State University (OSU) earning a dual B.S. in Microbiology-Sustainability. My fascination with microorganisms inspired me to shift the course of my academic career when I took a soil science course. Even today the complicated relationships formed by environmental microorganisms are not entirely understood, but their importance is simply indisputable. I am most interested in how soil microbes contribute to plant health in an agricultural context. I also wish to study biotechnological solutions to mounting problems using microorganisms; bio-remediation and genetic modification, for example. While attending OSU I worked as a research assistant for three years in a soil-borne plant pathogen laboratory. This experience allowed me to practice a wide variety of skills associated with my major. I took on the Sustainability dual-degree to remain well-rounded as an aspiring scientist. This program exposed me to sociology and economics, topics generally not featured in a standard life science degree. Also, I believe it is important that all industries strive to improve their consumption of natural resources in the interest of maintaining the environment for future generations. To supplement my major coursework, I completed minors in chemistry and soil science. Finally, to further distinguish myself I conducted a nine-month research project regarding soil solarization earning the 'undergraduate research fellow' transcript notation.
