Carlo Iacono’s Expertise With over 27 years in library services, I've evolved into a forward-thinking leader passionate about modernising information services for the digital age. My journey spans Australia and the UK, each role contributing to my vision of libraries as dynamic, tech-enabled hubs of learning and innovation. As University Librarian (& previously AI Strategy Development Adviser) at Charles Sturt University, I'm driving the ethical integration of AI into our academic landscape. I've spearheaded the implementation of AI principles, drafted our GenAI strategic plan and governance framework, and secured MS CoPilot for enhanced operations. My team and I are pioneering AI-driven prompts to streamline processes and elevate service delivery. But technology is just one piece of the puzzle. I'm equally committed to fostering a collaborative, empowered team culture and improving the student experience. We've removed barriers like library fines and reduced costs, making our resources more accessible than ever. Throughout my career, I've left a trail of innovation: • Revived a library function single-handedly at Boodle Hatfield • Built a central information function from scratch at Practical Law Company • Developed a Skills Capability Framework for Librarians at Griffith University • Created a virtual legal library at the Supreme Court of Queensland • Introduced Preservica for research data preservation at the University of Bath Colleagues describe me as a "big picture thinker" with a talent for problem-solving and change management. I'm known for my open-minded approach, encouraging teams to experiment with new ideas while maintaining a customer-centred focus. My leadership style is rooted in agility and empowerment, creating psychologically safe spaces where innovation thrives. I'm particularly proud of my recent contributions to AI governance in higher education, including giving evidence at a government inquiry into AI in Education and participating in the Copyright and Artificial Intelligence Reference Group. Looking ahead, I'm excited about technology's potential to transform library services and enhance learning experiences. I'm committed to embracing these technologies ethically and inclusively, aligning with our core mission of supporting global learning, teaching, and research. Whether you're a colleague, a potential collaborator, or simply interested in the future of libraries and AI in education, I'd love to connect. Let's explore how we can shape the future of information services in our rapidly changing world.
