  I have had a wonderful time working in both academic science and industry. I started my career at the University of California, San Francisco where I received my PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology working on transcriptional circuits and network evolution. I then continued on to successful post-doctoral fellow and research associate positions at the University of California, Berkeley working on the molecular biology of photosynthesis. It was fantastic studying basic biology, but you only get one career in science. By 2021, I felt that my growth as a scientist was slowing down. I made the decision to accept a position from Amyris, Inc. in early 2022. In the synthetic biology industry, I have found many of things that I loved about academic science. Reading papers, attending seminars, thinking deeply about complex problems and breaking them down into solvable parts. I’ve also experienced a high level of teamwork, institutional support and a pace of discovery at Amyris that is exhilarating. I have many academic publications, but to name the journals of my favorite papers those were published in Cell, Science, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, New Phytologist, and Global Change Biology. Research that I started at UC Berkeley continues with what I hope will continue to be important insights into how photosynthesis responds to climate change.
