Prior to rejoining the active U.S. Navy in 1999, he was a litigation attorney in private practice (San Francisco area) focused on complex multi-party litigation, insurance, and maritime law. He has successfully tried cases in both Federal and State Courts. He has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, both in and out of uniform (once hitchhiking from Istanbul to New Delhi). In his initial Navy tour, he served on the USS OGDEN (Engineering Division Officer) and USS BAGLEY (Navigator), completing two WESTPAC deployments. He is an active member of the California Bar The American Bar Association and former Interest Group Chair for the American Society of International Law.
