After beginning a career teaching literature and foreign language at the University of Michigan, and then working as an advisor and advising coordinator to support students and build community and resources across the liberal arts college, I had 2 experiences that shifted my career path. The first was participating in a social justice mediation training, during which one of the trainers told us that we always needed to ‘look to the bottom’ and create space for the person with the least power to have a voice. The second was taking students on a month-long service-learning trip to volunteer with a grassroots NGO in an impoverished Muslim neighborhood in New Delhi, where I had never been before. In the words of a friend, “What could go wrong?” These two experiences fueled my passion for working with and strengthening communities to support those most in need on their journey to lead better, more dignified lives. So, I left my job and joined the Peace Corps. I spent the next three years teaching and training teachers in Thailand, then returned to the States and spent a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer working with a coalition of nonprofits in Philadelphia. This enabled me to survey the nonprofit landscape and focus on the issues of hunger and homelessness. Whether working with students, advisors, colleagues, or volunteers and community members, whether as a team leader or member, my approach is first and foremost collaborative, and the successes I have achieved are built on a foundation of strong relationships and communication, furthered by careful planning, excellent organization, and the perseverance and commitment to do whatever it takes.
