Christopher Kindell’s Expertise Christopher "Topher" Kindell is an assistant instructional professor in the Committee on Environment, Geography, and Urbanization (CEGU) at the University of Chicago. He is a historian of public health, technology, and the environment within the United States and the broader Pacific World. He teaches interdisciplinary courses on the history of natural and anthropogenic climate change; medicine, technology, and environmental health; gender, race, indigeneity, and migration; and American and British imperialism across the Pacific World. He is also the B.A. Thesis Coordinator for 4th-year undergraduate students pursuing advanced research projects within CEGU. Topher's research examines how municipal public health institutions have historically responded to the global spread of infectious diseases from the eighteenth century to the present. His current book manuscript, "Pasteurizing the Pacific: Public Health, Empire, and the Making of the Urban Pacific World," explores how Western public health and medical professionals transformed once backwater seaports like Honolulu, San Francisco, and Sydney into disease-screening checkpoints — a regionally synchronized process that aided American and British imperial endeavors across the Pacific. More recently, he has been investigating how major metropolises like Chicago and Bogotá actively collaborated with local residents when designing and implementing COVID-19-related health policies. Topher holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago (2019), an M.Sc. in History from the University of Edinburgh (2011), and a B.A. in History and Psychology from UC Santa Barbara (2009). Before joining CEGU in 2023, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Program in the History of Medicine at the University of Minnesota (2021-22) and a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Chicago (2019-2021).
