Christopher Preston’s Expertise Wensleydale (yes, as in the cheese) is not an obvious place to inspire a budding Director of Photography. A fifty mile round trip, the cinema was a rare treat. So I cannot romantically tell you that I was bewitched by the silver screen, my fate sealed. It was more prosaic than that. The photogenic, ever changing light and landscape of the Yorkshire dales proved my muse. In a way TV came to me as I would spend hours watching the BBC shoot ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. That, very definitely ‘Put a tin hat on it.’ as my dearly departed Granddad would have said. After BTEC media studies in Harrogate, a spell shooting corporates. I applied to the Bournemouth and Pool Film School I did a one year course shooting exclusively on super 16mm. It gave me my first taste of working on drama. After leaving I shot numerous shorts on Super 16mm and 35mm. Which lead to a low budget feature Beginner’s Luck. Which in turn lead to my first TV drama break. ‘Brookside’ for Channel Four, working within a tight soap schedule was a terrifying prospect but I survived! Hollyoaks, Doctors, Holby City and Casualty followed. In recent years I seem to have cornered the market in dramas in beautiful places where people kill each other. Midsomer Murders for ITV to every series of Father Brown for BBC Worldwide. It has won a number of RTS awards and has sold to territories all over the world ‘The Coroner’ again for BBC Worldwide, I’ve lit 10 episodes. Set in present day Devon starring Claire Goose as the Lighthaven Coroner.. A very different palette, 1950’s Birmingham, the setting for ‘WPC56’ the story of the West Mildland’s first female police officer. Shot over three series I lit 7 episodes. I’m now at a point in my career where I’m looking to move on to the next level. Be it period or contemporary drama. Broadcast or On-Demand. We’re living in a golden age of TV, with technology that wide-eyed lad from Yorkshire could never have imagined. I wonder what he would have made of it?
