Clive Wilmer’s Expertise I'm a poet, critic, verse translator and University teacher. I also lead the Guild of St George, the charity founded by John Ruskin, the Victorian critic and social reformer. Poetry's my main activity. Eight collections of my work have been published, the latest being 'New and Collected Poems' (Carcanet Press, 2012). I translate poetry from Hungarian in collaboration with the Hungarian poet George Gömöri. We've translated more than 20 poets, notably Miklós Radnóti and György Petri, both of whom we introduced to the British reading public. I lecture on Victorian poetry at Cambridge and have edited essays by the 20th century poets, Thom Gunn and Donald Davie, on both of whom I've published essays and articles. I'm currently editing Gunn's 'Selected Poems'. I'm a keen follower of the Victorian thinker John Ruskin, a selection of whose work I've edited for Penguin Classics. I've written and lectured extensively on him and his disciple William Morris, whose work I've also edited. I regard both these figures as important, not only for their work in its own time, but for its relevance to our world today. That's why I work for the Guild of St George and other Ruskinian organisations. I'm also an honorary Patron of the William Morris Gallery at Walthamstow. From 1986-2005 I earned my living as a freelance writer and teacher. I fronted a radio programme 'Poet of the Month' for BBC Radio 3, I reviewed books for the press and I taught literature and sometimes art history for a variety of institutions: the Board of Continuing Education at Cambridge, the English-Speaking Union, the Bell School of Languages and various Cambridge Colleges. In 2005 I was elected a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where I teach undergraduates English; I continue to teach in other Colleges. I find it hard to imagine a life without teaching and learning.
