Cobus Muller’s Expertise Jacobus H. Muller (Cobus) is currently employed as a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. He is tasked with undergraduate training in Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering and post graduate supervision and research in the Biomedical Engineering Research Group. He has established a multi-disciplinary research collaboration involving biomedical engineering, orthopaedic biomechanics, physiotherapy and sports medicine. Using musculoskeletal modelling, his research endeavours focus on knee biomechanics and related pathologies. Topics include the study of knee anatomy geometry classification and prediction; patellofemoral dynamics as a function of geometry and soft tissue stabilisation; aetiology of anterior knee pain in an intra-subject analysis; intra and inter subject analysis of the biomechanical function of partial and total knee prostheses. These studies are performed in collaboration with researchers in South Africa, Europe (France, Italy and Belgium) and the USA. Research tools include computational modelling, imaging (CT and MRI), segmentation and CAD manipulation as well as motion capturing (Vicon, EMG and pressure maps).
