Connor Booz’s Expertise I am currently working for Crown Cork and Seal as Plant Superintendent at a beverage can plant in Olympia, Washington. The plant employs roughly 160 employees and makes upwards of 8 million cans a day. I began in Kentucky as part of Crown’s FORWARD leadership program. From there I moved to Olympia in February 2022 to continue my rotational program. During my rotations I was able to work with a wide variety of roles, including the plant engineer, plant superintendent, plant manager, production scheduler, shipping manager, and others. The rotation helped me understand all aspects of the business, not just the manufacturing side. I then started as a production supervisor at the end of my rotational program. My role has an emphasis on safety, quality, and production. I am directly responsible for the continuous operation of over 40 machines, including parts/consumable purchasing, maintenance scheduling, quality control, OEM relations, and meeting environmental standards. I am also in charge of leading Lean 6 Sigma and process improvement projects pertaining my equipment. The plant runs 24/7 and makes over 7 million cans each day, so improper planning on my part could cause an unplanned shutdown resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars. My previous roles within the plant and company have helped prepare me to take on the role as Plant Superintendent. As plant superintendent I am responsible for driving all aspects of the safe production of quality product. This includes working with management team to plan production, coordinate maintenance activities, ensure quality standards are met, and optimize the use of available resources. By looking at downtime and spoilage trends I can appropriately prioritize activities to keep efficient operations while factoring costs. I am responsible for scheduling for the entire plant, and I assume duties of the plant manager as needed. I graduated from Clemson in May 2021 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my time at Clemson, I have become proficient in many different areas such as problem solving, the use of computer software, ethical responsibility, and engineering methods. I work well in groups and have learned the importance of communication at every level of the engineering process.
