Craig Hendrix’s Expertise Dr. Craig Hendrix is an academic leader in the clinical pharmacology of antiretroviral drugs for HIV prevention and serves as Director of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and the Drug Development Unit at The Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on the development of antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV infection. His HIV prevention research has been supported by CDC, NIH, USAID, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, amfAR, and sponsors in the pharmaceutical industry. He has over 300 scientific articles of original research published in peer-reviewed journals. He joined the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1994. Since 1998, he has served as Director of the Drug Development Unit which focuses on early phases of clinical drug development. Since 2006, he has been the Director of the Pharmacology Core Laboratory for both the HIV Prevention Trials Network and the Microbicide Trials Network. Dr. Hendrix has also served on the FDA Antiviral Drug Products Advisory Committee, the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Infectious Diseases, and the Boards of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has been a very active teacher and mentor of medical students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows and has received awards from Hopkins for his teaching and mentoring excellence. He is currently the Chairman of the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology. Prior to joining the Hopkins faculty, he served 13 years in the U.S. Air Force as Aerospace Physiologist, then, after medical training, as a physician-scientist Director of the HIV Research and Education Program, Wilford Hall Medical Center, and Senior Scientist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He received his baccalaureate degree at MIT and his medical degree from Georgetown University magna cum laude. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and post-doctoral fellowships in infectious diseases and clinical pharmacology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
