Daniel Rust’s Expertise My academic area of specialty is the business and history of transportation. My first book, "Flying Across America," was published in the spring of 2009 by the University of Oklahoma Press. In the book I traced the evolution of the transcontinental airline passenger experience in the U.S. from the late 1920s to the present. The book received outstanding reviews in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, Air & Space/Smithsonian, etc. Subsequent books included "AEP River Operations: Legacy of Excellence" (published in 2013) and "The Aerial Crossroads of America: St. Louis's Lambert Airport" (published in 2016). Co-authored with Alan Hoffman, my latest book was published in late 2023 by the Missouri Historical Society Press and distributed through the University of Chicago Press. Entitled "Come Fly with Me: The Rise and Fall of Trans World Airlines," the book recounts how three larger-than-life personalities—Charles Lindbergh, Howard Hughes, and Carl Icahn—shaped the history of Trans World Airlines (TWA) and determined its fate. I have conducted externally-funded research, including principal investigator for an inventory and survey of the transportation, distribution and logistics industry in Missouri (funded by the U.S. DOT), principal investigator for a project examining the transfer of motor vehicle camera system technology from the private to the public sector (funded by Great Cities’ Universities Coalition), and faculty research associate for a project examining management systems for inland waterway traffic control (funded by Midwest Transportation Consortium and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers). Funded by the US DOT and the Union Pacific Foundation, another research project included surveying employees at Class 1 railroads regarding women in operational roles to investigate what railroads can do to recruit and retain more female employees. I was principal investigator for a project funded by the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium to develop curriculum and student activities based upon NASA aerospace initiatives. I was also co-principal investigator for a project, Model Analysis of the Effect of Reduced Ice Coverage on Great Lakes Marine Transportation, funded by University of Wisconsin Sea Grant College Program.
