Danny Huylebroeck’s Expertise Studied zoology in Gent and obtained his PhD in molecular biology there, on the cloning and sequencing of the first human flu virus genes (in particular HA, NA), which explained the antigenic drift of the virus and the animal origin (ducks) of the Hong Kong H3N2 virus 1968 pandemic. Then EMBO post-doc fellow at EMBL, Heidelberg, working on intracellular trafficking of membrane proteins, the cloning of infectious cDNA of the RNA-virus Semliki Forest Virus, and the cloning of activin cDNA and expression in mammalian cells. After return from EMBL, senior group leader at Innogenetics SA (INNX, Gent) working on growth factors, including on activins. In collaborations with the Hubrecht Laboratory, Utrecht, and MRC-NIMR, London, demonstrated that activins had Spemann Organizer inducing activity in amphibian embryos, which was the true start for further research in embryology. In 1991 established the new lab of Molecular Biology at KU Leuven with help of INNX (now Fujirebio). This academic lab, focusing on TGFb/BMP signaling in vertebrate embryos and also developing new technologies, became part of the Flanders Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) in 1995 for 16 years. In 2006 full professor in developmental biology in the Faculty of Medicine and, in 2012, lab became part of the new dept of Development & Regeneration. Mid-2013, moved to the Cell Biology dept at Erasmus MC (Rotterdam), but also remained part-time affiliated to KU Leuven for research, teaching and coordination of multi-partner projects. Research included: - Functional analysis of Smad signaling and Smad partners (transcription factors, eg. ZEB2) in knockout mice and stem cells and cerebral organoids from mouse and human, including modeling Mowat-Wilson Syndrome. - Systems biology (gene-gene interactions, perturbation, multi-omics) of Smad/SIP signaling in embryonic stem cell differentiation, mainly to neural cells. - BMP signaling and/or ZEB2 regulated stem cell niches, incl. multiple collaborations with immunologists and cancer researchers. Emeritus at KU Leuven from Oct. 1, 2021; same at Erasmus MC from Jun. 19, 2022. Currently guest scientist at Cell Biology department in Rotterdam.
