Despi O'connor’s Expertise I am passionate about the Mornington Peninsula where I live and work with my family. As a teacher, I have had the privilege of engaging daily with a wide cross-section of our community, helping me tune into the issues that matter. With over 15 years of involvement with many community organisations, from kindergarten committees to running successful community sporting clubs, I have demonstrated a capacity to get things done and I have had a positive impact on people’s lives. As a long-term resident I have been actively engaged with the community since the day I arrived. I am a passionate community member who believes that acting locally has a ripple effect. I like to get involved and am always up for a challenge. I am willing to take on important causes that are important to the community; I listen carefully and support passionately. I recognise our diverse population, from our youth to our elders in all their unique forms and I will strive for equity for all residents on the Mornington Peninsula. I am dedicated to educating others about the traditional owners the Bunurong/Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and in the spirit of reconciliation hope to support the next stage of the journey through self-determination. I have actively represented my community on many platforms. Through the School Council I advocated for and supported young people to walk and ride safely to school by working with parents, students, council and Monash University to calm traffic around schools. When children could not find a team to play basketball with, I formed and led a club that has provided a place to play for over 1000 participants, all run by a team of volunteers. As Chief Instructor in a local Surf Lifesaving club, I trained hundreds of people from our youth through to older adults in gaining important qualifications that support the wider community. Education is at the core of my being. I use these skills to assist others in understanding various sides to every situation. There will always be for and against. Finding the balance is key. Bringing people along on the journey builds everyone's capacity to move forward positively and together. As a trail runner, I have covered all corners of the Peninsula and I understand the delicate balance needed between maintaining the Peninsula’s unique landscape and making sure we have a vibrant community that remains open for business with new opportunities to thrive sustainably into the future. Working together we can strike the right balance.
