Douglas Steding’s Expertise I am a partner at Northwest Resource Law PLLC, focusing my practice on environmental law and litigation. Although I represent clients with a variety of interests and connections to the Pacific Northwest economy, I have found myself increasingly representing clients that form much of the core of the Northwest economy, including marine transport, stevedores, shipbuilders, fisheries and aquaculture, and other industrial facilities that do business in and around the water. I help these businesses on issues related to water pollution and quality, waste management, and clean up of contaminated lands, sediments, and spills. I leverage my scientific background in my legal practice, bringing my scientific knowledge to bear when addressing complex regulatory challenges for my clients. My land use and project permitting practice also benefits from my technical background, enabling me to help businesses navigate the complex process associated with development in or near sensitive aquatic environments. Prior to attending law school, I earned a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences/Geochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz. There, I studied the fate and transport of metals in the atmosphere and in estuaries, and obtained a broad education in chemical and physical oceanography in addition to environmental toxicology. My research resulted in a cover article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and my work included some of the first studies of the impact of industrial emissions from China on mercury deposition on the west coast of North America. What I enjoy most about my practice is the complex intersection of science, law, and policy. I want to deliver results for clients and enjoy working through the translation of science, law, and policy in a way that balances the strong environmental values of the Pacific Northwest with client needs and business goals.
