Duncan Hobbs’s Expertise Growing up in family of scientists and engineers, I developed a strong value for data-driven decision making. During a four-year undergraduate research fellowship at Georgetown University, I developed a deep interest in quantitative economic research because of the key role rigorous analysis plays (or should play!) in the design, assessment and improvement of economic policies. I have over four years of experience in statistical modeling and analysis at a leading think-tank, examining the effects of labor market policies on labor market outcomes. I manage multiple long-term research projects simultaneously, independently explore complex data and adopt new statistical methods, and collaborate with many external researchers and third-party data providers. Working with the Director of Economic Policy Studies, I have learned about the critical importance of clearly presenting results and effectively communicating findings through editing academic journal articles, congressional testimony and weekly opinion columns. Outside of my job, I pursue independent research related to the political economy of trade and labor market policy and continue to expand my modeling and analysis skills. As an undergraduate teaching assistant for courses in international trade and international finance, I cultivated a love for teaching because it forces me to better understand a subject, and helps me refine my knowledge and my ability to clearly communicate ideas. I can learn as much from teaching a subject as I do from studying it on my own. I continue to serve as a tutor for students at Georgetown in economics and mathematics courses, as well as provide advice for economics senior theses or other research projects.
