Edward Chell’s Expertise While my practice is rooted in painting, I also work across media, making combinations of objects and text and exploring the site specific. My work foregrounds conflicting narratives within the spatial environment, capturing the collisions between values and meanings we bring to our experiences of place, particularly borders and peripheral places. The publications that accompany my exhibitions aim to open up a dialogue with and around the work. My exhibition Bloom runs at the Horniman Museum, London until December 2015. Bloom responds to the Horniman's rare folio of cyanotypes by Anna Atkins, a 19th C botanist and pioneer photographer. The installation of 40 new silhouettes paintings portrays living plants in the Horniman Gardens and specimens from their archive. An accompanying book Bloom, with essays on fine art, cultures of collecting and ecology, is published in November 2015. My exhibition Soft Estate and accompanying publication were the outcomes of an AHRC Fellowship for 2012-2013. Soft Estate explores landscapes made and transformed by car culture. While urban in nature, these motorscapes are fragile, yet extremely self-sustaining and hard environments, changing landscapes that embody both beauty and survival. Soft Estate was exhibited at Bluecoat,Liverpool from December 2013 to February 2014 then Spacex, Exeter from March to May 2014. I exhibited initial work from this project in Little Chef restaurants, with a view to prompting questions about the relationship between our experience of landscape and the ways in which we travel through it. Previous projects include 'Viewing Stations' at Tank Gallery, ‘Gran Tourismo’ at Little Chef Ings, supported by Grizedale Arts, and work commissioned by Stour Valley Arts, Kent and The Swedenborg Society, supported by Arts Council England.
