Since completing my PhD in 2016, I began to explore (as a Claude Leon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow) the drivers of peritidal microbialite persistence, including the unique and unusual metazoans associated with this habitat. As a Research Fellow at the Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, I investigated the direct link between modern microbialite environments and comparable extinct microbialites, in terms of functional drivers of abundance. This palaeoecological link is the key to understanding how modern microbialite biodiversity might predictably respond during times of environmental change. I have travelled widely to present and collaborate on my research, including to Peru, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany. I am now a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Zoology at the Nelson Mandela University and my primary research interests are towards the functional drivers of benthic macrofauna in coastal environments and how these processes influence ecological dynamics.
