Gijsbert Wierink’s Expertise The incredible changes our societies go through are both enabled and constrained by access to raw materials. It is clear that geopolitical tensions, the climate crisis, as well as changes in values drive the transition to sustainable societies. Sustainability means more than recycling. Sustainability points to the ability to produce, use, and re-use continuously over time, while respecting ethical boundaries. This is where use of materials becomes sustainable materials strategy and where raw materials become critical raw materials. I help companies and government analyze the status quo, identify targets, and chart a path towards more sustainable and resilient operations. These processes usually can be divided into three segments: ♦ Resilience of raw materials processes and supply chains – Can we make it? ♦ Responsible sourcing – Should we make it like this? ♦ Sustainable raw materials insight and strategy – How can we ensure to make it in the future? Sustainability and innovation are broad and multidisciplinary challenges. My international working experience, knowledge of raw materials, and my interest in history and geopolitics give me a unique and holistic perspective to address these challenges. I have helped companies in the metals and materials space renew their strategic development efforts in a variety of roles and countries across Europe. Especially for challenges as broad as supply chain resilience, responsible sourcing, and sustainability a system-wide approach is needed. Model and systems thinking is one of the powerful tools to help improve the way we work and develop. Models and metrics provide new perspectives, methods, and focus to create value and help build the organization to produce higher quality products efficiently and safely.
