James Duncan’s Expertise When I decided to study computer-aided mechanical engineering at GCU, I pictured myself as a henchman for Q, working on gadgets for James Bond. Although I soon learned that my chosen field involved far less crazy contraptions and far more mathematics, I never lost my hunger to use mathematics and technology to analyse and design real-world applications. As a graduate of computer-aided mechanical engineering, I have gained experience in these areas: • ANSYS 2D/3D Analysis • CES Edu Pack for Analysing Materials • Computer-Aided Design • Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics • Mathematics and Scientific Principles All these skills learned in my course were used in my honours project where I designed and modelled a mechanical mechanism, conducted a material analysis to acquire a suitable material and ran an ANSYS analysis. Next, I used the mathematical and scientific principles to verify the findings from the ANSYS simulation, which enabled me to pass on technical drawings and a suitable material to the technicians to construct a prototype. As masters year came around, my new challenge came in the form of machine learning for my master’s group project. In my role, I learned how to use MATLAB to create a vision system for the computer. Here I managed to get the computer to detect specific objects within an image and then calculate the distance of and position of these objects from the camera. This continuous drive for technology incorporation has lead to learning a new skill: learning a computer programming language. I enrolled in an online course to learn Python and now I have a strong understanding of the basics. Although I haven’t worked on any crazy contraptions for Q, I have learned a great deal about technology and engineering through my degree and personal interests.
