Jamie Northup’s Expertise Post graduating six years ago I have gained academic and industrial research experience. These varied roles have provided me with a broad range of perspectives, with a predominant focus on molecular biology. I studied three proteins involved in regulating 3’-end processing of mRNA and the activity of the multi-subunit enzyme, RNA polymerase II, and if those proteins played a larger role in DNA damage. I finished a post-baccalaureate fellowship at New England Biolabs where I assisted in characterizing a novel, high-fidelity in vitro transcription enzyme variant. This allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the biochemistry of mRNA synthesis, as well as learn how to use this biosynthetic process for downstream experiments. I worked as well in genetic therapies helping with designing in vitro assay development and cloning of AAV products. This first foray into genetic therapies sparked my interest in disease modeling and drug discovery, now working as a Research Associate at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where I would be able to use patient stem cell-derived neurons in high content imaging experiments to assess the efficacy of novel therapeutic approaches.
