Jeff Compton-Nelson’s Expertise I am a strategist, storyteller, and creative eager to make the world better, more beautiful, and more connected. I have 13+ years of experience creating strategic communications across platforms that are clear, transparent, and human and impact audiences and influence behavior. My work has spanned crisis communications (topics ranging from public health, racial justice, national tragedies, and more), executive messaging (ghostwriting for multiple Vice Presidents), speeches, news media and PR inquiries, website copy, social media content, slide decks, infographics, video scripts, policy manuals, change management notifications, personal correspondence, and more. In my free time, you might find me laughing at my kooky backyard chickens, making pancakes with my daughters, or observing the beauty of a forest canopy, art museum, or good architecture. PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: ⇝ Oversaw writing, content strategy, and project management for Duke University student and family-facing COVID-19 messaging that was clear, informational, and compassionate, reaching 50,000+ global audience. Expertly orchestrated a multi-level review process with 14 executives to ensure accuracy, mitigate liability, and improve consumer attitudes toward our global brand. The CDC lauded Duke's COVID-19 response and it felt good to be a part of it. ⇝ Created and managed a major DEI initiative at Duke University. Through branding, strategic communications, multi-platform engagement, storytelling, and outreach, we shaped the narrative about justice and community for 900+ people over four years, representing 400% audience growth during that span. Each year I ran Just Space, I was recognized by our Division; in 2021, senior leaders nominated my team for Duke's Presidential Award, the highest honor given to staff or faculty at the university. ⇝ All of the small and large comments -- in texts, emails, in person -- about how much of an impact my writing has had on my audiences: "You have transformed the tone and image of [this 52M, 250+ staff department]" (from a Vice President spoken shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began); "You put words to how I've been feeling" (an email reply to a message following a student's death); and many, many more. EXPERTISE: strategy, storytelling, strategic communications, writing, program and project management, collaboration, content strategy, business strategy, creativity, DEI. Let's connect!
