First elected in November 1999, re-elected in November 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 for a 4 year term that ended November 2023. I was the Mayor Pro Tem in 2021-2022, 2017-2018, 2013-2014, 2009-2010, 2005-2006 and 2001-2002. We rotate that position. I also served on the Executive Committee of our regional government, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) for 21 years and I'm a past Chair of SEMCOG. I was elected by and represented cities and villages in Oakland county. I was selected as a Taubman Fellow by SEMCOG and spent one summer at Harvard in the Kennedy School of Government, completing the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program. At the state level I'm a Past President of the Michigan Municipal League (MML) and I am currently an Honorary Life Member. In travel I have owned Travel Is Fun since 1988 and I am a past President of the Detroit chapter of SKAL International, and a past President of the state chapter of the Caribbean Tourism Organization. I currently sell travel around the world. Call me at 248-506-4483. In Detroit I'm a board member of Voices for Earth Justice and involved with Hope House in north Brightmoor. I am a member of Detroit Jews for Justice. I also serve on the JCRC's Community Relations Committee and am a member of the Black Jewish coalition and the Michigan Black Caucus of Locally Elected Officials, as a retiree. My primary career was with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, where I was Research Director for 18 year, and then served as a District Executive in Muskegon and then Flint, solving racial conflict problems. I also spent 4 years with the Michigan Department of Transportation as their EEO Metro Compliance Supervisor in SE Michigan, supervising a staff of 8 that enforced EEO contract compliance on large road building contracts. I was an original Peace Corps Volunteer teacher in the Philippines (1962-64) in Dolo, Bansalan, Davao del Sur and have supported the school for the past 62 years.
