Jesse Bash’s Expertise My research is focused on developing and expanding the capabilities of current air-quality and biogeochemical models to better represent the nitrogen cycle, mercury cycle and atmospheric mercury chemistry, and the coupling of ecosystem and air-quality models. My is focused on the development of algorithms to couple ecosystem and air-quality based on first principles through the development of empirical relationships derived from intensive coupled measurement and modeling campaigns. Currently this research is accomplished through three areas of emphasis. 1. local scale modeling and measurement studies to elucidate processes critical in the air-surface exchange of trace gases and model algorithm development 2. use of novel surface and satellite observations for regional scale model evaluations and model land use parameterizations 3 the coupling of atmospheric chemical transport models with biogeochemical ecosystem models. This work is inherently multidisciplinary and has been made possible through extensive collaborations and effectively working with a team of researchers in at federal agencies and academic institutions. The goal of these research areas is to advance the science of the next generation of air-quality models to better connect to ecosystem and human exposure models. This will be initially addressed through a more holistic/integrated representation of the cycling of nitrogen and carbon and its relation to air-quality and ecosystem functions in the coupled atmosphere- biosphere system.
