They return to their communities and families, not only needing to find a job, but many struggle with substance abuse problems, insufficient education & job skills, few housing options, and mental health issues. In addition to these barriers, most are people of color, especially Hispanics (over 45% of the total state prison population are Hispanic). This is personal to me. When not at the State, I am improving my neighborhood & city by creating and championing community enrichment projects and policies as a City of Sacramento's Parks & Community Enrichment Commissioner.
