Joe Omana’s Expertise My career in Mechanical Engineering started off with my internship at Gill Industries as a Quality Engineer Intern. I gained experience in SOP/work instruction creation, testing products before sending them out to the customer using Go No Go Gauges, Ingstrom testing equipment. I had to transition into a cost estimator internship at TVA due to class schedules and internship hour requirements. After graduating with my BSME, I joined Smiths Interconnect in their Mechanical Engineer - Graduate Rotational Program. It was a 2 year program with 3 rotations as a Process Engineer, R&D Development engineer and Mechanical Design Engineer. In my first rotation, I used my past experience creating Visual SOPs for the assembly line and updated the written SOPs & worked on Driveworks. In my second rotation, I gained R&D Development engineering techniques for a medical device cable project that was in the R&D development phase. I worked extensively with the team and ended up remaining in the project until we had completely assembled the cable through all of its small dimensions and tight tolerance issues. I also helped update the process flow with SOPs in the R&D assembly line & built a PLC for the crimping station. I had no experience prior with PLC so I used company knowledge from the PLC for basic understanding and reached out to collaborate with fellow automation engineers in the company to help me with any issues I was facing. In my last rotation, I gained mechanical design engineering experience from concept to production run on small to mid size projects I was responsible for. In large size projects, I helped the principal design engineers on smaller components. I would interface with suppliers, customers, and cross functional team members until project completion. I gained experience with Solidworks and AutoCAD CAD software and Solidworks PDM. Once my engineering rotations ended, I was asked if I wanted to join the NPI Procurement team because there were no openings for engineering in my level at the moment. I took advantage of this opportunity knowing I wanted to go back to engineering where I worked on one of my weaknesses which was design for manufacturability by asking questions to suppliers about how parts could be improved for manufacturability.
