I focus on creating an environment where members of the team can feel safe to raise the dissenting voice so that we do not fall into a group think mentality. I encourage the team to not only ask why but to ask why not when looking at a problem. As well as giving them the freedom to look at how a problem can be resolved in a non traditional way. I am self aware and know my limitations, so I want a leadership team where we complement each other’s skills and styles rather than try and replicate them. This means we focus less on whose role it is to do something and more on who is the best leader to take the lead on a given task based upon experience or aptitude. I ask all my leaders to focus on the end customer need and centre all development around what will make a product or service easier and more personalized to the customer. It does not matter how good a product or service is unless the customer sees it as adding value to their overall experience. So getting customer input/feedback early is key, as is being flexible enough to recognize when we have gotten it wrong and being ok to change focus without fear of failure. I have been in Wealth Management industry for 28 years. The industry has always been in a state of change, yet it needs to evolve. Technology allows us to do more but the risk is the commoditization of the industry instead we must focus on personalized client experiences where an individual’s core values are reflected in the organization they work with and where they invest their money.
