The Centre was established to promote the ideas contained in the written work of Emanuel Swedenborg, a 17th Century Swedish statesman and renowned scientist, inventor and searcher for the meaning of life. His works was familiar to Benjamin Franklin, Presidents Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and also influenced other significant minds like Dr Carl Jung, William Blake, Helen Keller, Dostoyevsky, Yeats, Emerson, Coleridge, D.T. Susuki and numerous others. Swedenborg's works were carried on the First Fleet to Australia and keenly read by Australia's architect of Federation and second Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin. Today, Swedenborg's universal ideas are more relevant than ever as people seek personal freedom in their spiritual search, and people wish to approach spiritual ideas and beliefs in a rational way. This means taking into account the findings of science, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, literature, etc to inform us and so to develop a richer and more satisfying inner life.
