That was another inflection point in my career. Building our own client and server game me a deep understanding of the technology that has served me well ever since. Learning Agile development In 2005 I joined a mid-sized startup which subsequently was bought by Follett School Systems. Our little team of 15 developers was required to adopt agile methodologies practiced by the main R&D group. Like web applications, Agile just made sene to me and I was one of the leaders in transitioning our processes over to Extreme Programming. Engineer -> Manager The next inflection point in my career was when I moved from being an individual contributor to managing ICs. I was reluctant to give up coding but soon discovered how much I loved coaching and mentoring engineers, improving the processes we used, and collaborating with product, design, and stakeholders.My team became the company standard for high performing and was modeled by other teams. Innovation Leader I then had the opportunity to run our innovation lab. I acted as product manager, engineering manager, researcher, and evangelist. My strategic thinking, collaboration and influence skills really grew exponentially during that time. Pandemic When the pandemic hit, the company changed in many ways that no longer aligned with my philosophy and I eventually accepted a development manager role at Shopify. I learned so much working at a mission-driven, product engineering led company. But I also discovered that the management skills I had acquired over the years translated even to engineers at a very high level.
