John Bacon’s Expertise My teaching philosophy is based on the experiential learning model and a quote oft attributed to Dr. Albert Einstein, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” With these two guiding principles, I seek to lead students on a road of both self-discovery and an exploration into the world of the marketplace. This has proved to be a rewarding and challenging task. When I first began teaching I used concepts that I was familiar with to teach students the basics of management and marketing. Rather than simply lecturing and having them parrot back definitions, I have them create marketing campaigns for actual companies. Working with organizations such as Chevrolet, Thomas Nelson Publishing, and World Vision allows students to create business and marketing plans and manage small groups. By immersing students in an unfamiliar world and then helping navigate as they go they create the beginnings of a “tool box” of knowledge from which to draw. They retain the information better – some studies say up to 70% better – than through traditional lecture based models. It is also more engaging and exciting to experience business rather than just hear about someone else’s experiences. Nonetheless, business and management can be very complex subjects. E.F. Schumacher stated, “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius – and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.” During my years of teaching I have endeavored to make the complexity inherent in business and management as simple as possible. Students are capable of learning very complex concepts. I find that when these concepts are broken down in to manageable portions they not only learn the concepts but also are able to understand the concepts. I have sought to explain complex concepts in several ways and crafted various assignments to help students see the challenge from many angles. This has often aided the students into much richer insight and understanding. This coupled with experiential learning is a very powerful learning model. When I teach I attempt to help the students experience the business world in the safety of the classroom. Here they are safe to fail and, therefore, learn. This also allows for the dissection of complex challenges and concepts. This helps the students see the simple components of a much more complex idea. In doing so, I have found they not only retain the knowledge, they understand the concepts, and begin to enjoy the journey of learning.
