John Wanberg’s Expertise I am a Professor of Industrial Design at Metropolitan State University of Denver, currently serving as the Industrial Design department chair. I have been teaching university-level coursework in Industrial Design for 18 years and enjoy seeing how my teaching efforts have enriched the creative aptitudes of my students. Although I have a knack for training prospective industrial designers, my first love is the act of product design, itself. I believe that truly effective design instructors must be skilled, practicing designers themselves. For that reason, I seek product design opportunities--whether person, or for-hire--whenever my busy schedule allows. I believe this constant professional skill development is critical to my ability to reasonably prepare students for their design careers. Among the many product design ventures I have been involved in as a professional designer, I feel my biggest accomplishments have been in the areas of medical device and transportation design. I prefer complex design tasks that require a reasonable degree of mechanical design and that allow me to delve beyond surface aesthetics into the actual functionality and manufacturability of the product. I have a strong interest in ergonomic and human factors research and have assisted in the development of several products that other aesthetics-based designers have avoided. For example, I have collaborated in the design of robotic prosthetics (for stroke victims and amputees) as well as dynamic, alternative vehicle architectures that have been functional and comfortable over a wide range of user sizes. In short, the more I learn and am allowed to push my skills during the development of a product, the more engaged I become, and the more effective I am in producing desirable product outcomes.
